As a digital agency owner, how do you maintain control and direction of your business while getting support and learning about the business skills you do not yet have? How do you ensure integrity of outcomes from consultants, where you don’t have the knowledge to understand they services the consultants are providing?
Lot’s of people will look at your successful digital agency and try and tell you they “know better” about certain things, they’ll try to sell you their services, running they agenda without really buying into your story, your journey, without knowing what you know. Yet they will suggest they know more than you and play on your insecurities.
As a point in case, we had a business coach come in like this to help us with growth, yet reduce our growth from 11% a month to less than 2% a month within 3 months. He tried to completely change our growth model, take resources from the aspects that were driving growth, to resource his ideas that simply weren’t working. And the more they didn’t work, the more resources he’d want redirected to prop up his ideas. It had a terrible impact on our business at the time… and we see this type of thing happen all the time.
You know more than you give yourself credit for. Master parts of your business, and then delegate these parts of the business to others. Don’t bring people in and abdicate responsibility of your business to them. This is where businesses become unstuck. And remember, you do not need to know about all the nitty gritty parts of someone else’s services, all you need to know is the outcomes they are driving so you can keep them aligned with those outcomes.
